Does My Child Need Braces?

Back to posts

As a parent, it can be difficult to identify whether the way your child’s teeth are growing in is considered ‘normal’ or if they may need the helping hand of braces.

In children, braces are usually had between the ages of 9 and 14, as this is when your child’s teeth mouth and jaw is still growing. If left until later life, treatment times may take a lot longer and results may be less substantial as a child’s jaw is more easily shaped and aligned than a grown adult. The average treatment time for braces in children varies from 18 months to 2 years, depending on the severity of the case.

Your child may need braces if any of the following issues are present…

*They have difficulty biting/chewing

*They have started mouth breathing

*They are regular thumbsuckers

*They have an over or underbite

*Teeth appear displaced or protruding

*Teeth are misaligned or do not meet at all

*Teeth are crowded or spaced out

*Poor teeth due to genetics

*Teeth are misaligned due to an accident

We believe your smile is something you should be happy with as you enter adulthood; it can dramatically improve your child’s confidence as well as the functionality of their teeth.

Every child is different and will require a different type of brace to fit in with their lifestyle and dental needs. Braces are not only recommended solely to fix any existing dental issues but also prevent further problems from occurring as your child grows and their teeth and jaw shifts.

Generally, children are given traditional metal braces as these have been proven to provide the best results in younger patients, however, for young people who are more self-conscious of their appearance, they may opt for clear braces such as Invisalign technology which are much more discrete.

Benefits of Braces for Children

*Enhanced self-esteem

*Confidence to smile and laugh freely

*Improve functionality of teeth, jaw and overall mouth

*Aesthetically appealing teeth

*Long-lasting results

*Improved dental hygiene

*Teeth become easier to clean and maintain

*Correct poor oral habits

*Prevents further treatment as an adult

*Cheaper than adult braces

You should first take your child to an orthodontist when they are around 6-7 years old so dentists can evaluate your child’s teeth and any treatment that may be required when they are older. Certain conditions are left until your child gets a little older to see if they fix themselves, but some dental issues such as protruding teeth and deep bites may be treated sooner.
